Omar Wani, Dr. sc. | Postdoctoral Researcher

Environmental Systems Dynamics Lab
University of California, Berkeley

Email: waniomar [at]

Omar Wani specializes in water science and engineering. His research work entails mathematical modeling of various water/water-infrastructure systems, in both built and natural environments, where one of the main goals is to aid and encourage risk-based, adaptive decision-making. He has been a part of several collaborative research projects under the broader ambit of earth and environmental sciences. He likes to work at the intersection of science and application. Apart from research, he enjoys stimulating conversations, reading poetry, running along streams, hiking up to glaciers, and traveling in general.

Research Interests: Smart water management. For example, using distributed information from novel, alternate sensing - while applying tools from advanced Bayesian statistics and data science - to substantially enhance the usability of integrated water-resources and water-infrastructure models as decision support systems. Other research themes include (in no particular order): risk-based design & decision-making, risk-related uncertainty analysis, compound risks (e.g. climate change and urban growth), flooding, antifragility in water infrastructure, adaptive control & design, and changes in deltaic water systems.

News: From June 2022, I am expected to start working in the Division of Geological and Planetary Sciences, Caltech as an SNSF postdoctoral fellow. Internships and bachelor's/master's thesis: If you are interested to do a reseach internship or a bachelor's/master's thesis with me, please drop me an email with your CV attached. Thanks.
